There is no greater Return on Investment than discipleship and investing in other people.
– Mike Duke (former CEO of Walmart)
A few weeks ago, A3.business had a wonderful gathering in Tokyo with marketplace leaders. Edwin Keh, former Senior Vice President at Walmart and Professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania joined us utilizing a 4-hour video interview he conducted with Mike Duke, quoted above and pictured below.
They taught on discipleship as an opening topic for the orientation and launch of A3's marketplace program (known as A3.business) for Japan.
As Mike’s quote suggests, far more than his investment in business and the influence he had (Forbes listed him as one of the ten most powerful people in the world), Mike views his time investing in people as having the biggest return on investment.
That’s profound! When the world tells us you must be number one or have ultimate control and power, to be in charge or at the top of your field, Mike reminds us of the influence of discipleship. Jesus had it right all along. That’s why he gave us his commission: “Make Disciples of All Nations!”
Edwin wisely used snippets from interviews with Mike as a catalyst for processing questions together. It was a great launch as these business leaders discussed issues facing them like integrity and competency from the passages about Daniel in the bible. We also discussed Paul’s time in prison and how he discipled no matter the consequences (read Acts 12).
Augmenting the launch as a devotional led by Rev. B.J. Moon from the Grace and Mercy Foundation in Japan. He showcased the Public Reading of Scripture as we simply listened to God’s word (John 14-15).
What a great launch: learning to abide in Christ (from the Gospel of John) and walking through what it means to ‘make disciples’ as Christ’s command for our lives. These two foundations pieces are pivotal for leadership and making a spiritual difference in this world. At A2, we call these:
Pray for us as we seek to expand on this launch: both for A3.business/Japan for marketplace leaders and as we seek to grow the ministry in other countries around the continent!

""There are plenty of ministries to help Christian leaders develop their skills. What sets A3.business apart is a focus on the transformation of a leader’s soul. A3 holds an integrated vision of life and leadership that refuses to separate a person’s calling in the world from his or her communion with Christ. By targeting this deeper level of existence, A3.business equips leaders with a new vision of faithfulness and not merely new tools of effectiveness.""
